Barkley:
An Introduction
Well,
hello there. My name is Barkley. Silly, isn't it? Believe me, it was not
my choice!
Since you're here, I might as well look cute. After all, that's what I
do best. It's called "neotony," and we Lhasa Apso's have perfected
it over the ages. I suppose you could equate it with my owner growing
an opposable thumb – the better to feed me with!
Neotony means that I will always have that "adorable puppy"
look.I can't read - yet, but I've been told that the dictionary calls
it "retention of juvenile characteristic in the adult." I'm
especially good at it, don't you think?
By
the way, ignore that woman in the picture with me. She's just there because
the man insisted.

The only thing she's good for is to make sure I have a nice warm bath,
a full food dish, and fresh water. She won't even let me sleep on her
bed after that last little nip.
Imagine! What nerve. I was only showing her who's the alpha dog in our
pack. The wonderful thing about neotony is that the man still thinks I'm
the cutest even after all the times I've had to put the woman in her place.
I can always count on him to sneak me choice bits of the foods she won't
let me have – sometimes he brings them back from their trips in
the "want to go" machine. He even calls me his baby. I've got
him wrapped around my little furry paw.
Being the cutest leaves one free to concentrate on the bigger picture.
My ancestors used to have wonderful, glamorous jobs in exotic places –
temples, palaces, you name it – where they guarded fabulous treasures.
I may not have that much responsibility, but I do have a glam job. I'm
the inspiration for the Lhasa Apso in the Paisley Sterling mystery series,
don't you know. And the wonderful thing is that I don't have to do anything
that I don't already do – sneak a nap on their down pillows when
the woman isn't looking, love every stranger who comes through the door,
look adoring at the man when he scratches me under the chin, and keep
her in line with an occasional nip or two.
Ain't life grand?
